4 Day Lead Launch Printed Circuit Board Design Scheme
Tuesday, January 08, 2002
Other speeches
(Left DTI 29/5/02)
Thank you, Anthony. I am delighted to be here today at the
launch of the Printed Circuit Board (PCB) Design Scheme. I
believe that this project will continue to develop the United
Kingdom as a leading global player, in this important high
value added area.
As the Government recognised in the 2001 White Paper, "Opportunity
for all in a world of change", the development and maintenance
of a healthy skills base is vital for ongoing economic success
and productivity in the UK. This is especially so in the all
important enabling technologies that make the UK a leading
Knowledge Economy: IT, Communications and electronics. This
is why my Department, in partnership with the Department for
Education and Skills, supports a major strategy to maintain
and improve the supply of skilled labour for these vital industries.
Our strategy has three key planks:
Maintaining the skills pipeline, so there is a plentiful
pool of skilled labour from which business can recruit;
Encouraging diversity in employment in IT, communications
and electronics industries - we really must work hard to tackle
the under-representation of women in the industry;
Developing new learning content and learning approaches that
directly address the needs of business;
This PCB project is part of that third objective, to ensure
that industry gets the people it needs, through a ground breaking
partnership between industry, the Education system and government.
Printed Circuit Boards are found in most electronic products,
virtually all electronic equipment contains one or more. The
UK is particularly strong in electronics design. It has the
EU's largest independent industry for silicon chip design,
with;
40% of all the independent design houses in Europe and;
more than 5,000 PCB Designers.
But if Britain is to continue this work then the number of
PCB Designers needs to be maintained and opportunities opened
for those currently in the profession to refresh their skills.
PCB Design is one of the highest value-added activities in
the production process. Design underpins many of the technical
advances in chip speed and new product design and current
practitioners need to constantly refresh and update their
skills. But we need more than that. We need :
In excess of 500 additional PCB Designers to cope with the
growth predicted over the next four years. This is a substantial
challenge for various reasons.
First, the traditional methods of entry to this profession
through mechanical apprenticeships is now inappropriate for
the skills required.
Second, the age profile of existing practitioners is such
that we have a real task to encourage and train new entrants
just to meet the shortfall that will arise through retirements.
The project will therefore establish PCB design centres in
six academic institutions throughout the UK;
Napier University, Edinburgh
University of Glamorgan, South Wales
Castlereagh College, Belfast
Bolton Institute, Bolton, Lancashire
University of East London
Newbury College, Newbury, Berkshire electronic design and

TronicsZone offers customized electronic design & prototyping
services covering a wide area in the electronics domain. We
design all kinds of electronic circuits & electronic products
according to custom specifications.

Some of the electronic design services we offer are:
Custom electronics design & product development/prototyping
service: This covers the design, prototyping and development
of all kinds of electronic hardware. We design according to
the requirements of the customer. Normally we require the
specifications for a design job from the customer. In case
the customer is not from the electronics field, then we can
convert the requirements of the customer supplied in "plain
English" to functional and electrical specifications
and then proceed towards completing the design.
Embedded systems design (hardware and firmware/software):
An embedded system is the one that "embeds" a microprocessor
(commonly called as "processor") or a microcontroller
(MCU) into the electronics design. Usually most everyday products
that we use like refrigerators, automobiles, washing machines,
microwave ovens and even your TV uses embedded microcontrollers
in them. The best thing about embedded systems is that most
of its functions are software controlled and can be changed
easily without much work lost in re-designing the hardware.
Although embedded systems design are a common part of any
electronic systems & used in most of our designs, its
worth mentioning it as a separate service since some customers
might be specifically looking for this service.
PCB (printed circuit board) design & prototyping (single
& multilayer): The printed circuit board, commonly referred
to as the "PCB", also called Printed Wiring Boards
(PWB), is an inherent part of every electronic hardware. This
is a board (usually green colored) which supports and interconnects
all the parts together. Every custom electronics hardware
that we design includes PCB layout designing, prototyping
& assembly by default. We can also offer PCB layout designing
(PCB designing for short) & prototyping as a standalone
service in order to convert any existing schematic diagrams
that you might have already designed into fully assembled
prototypes.
Complete electronic product design from concept to completion:
This involves the development of a full fledged, complete
"ready to market" product and consists of enclosure
design (either based on readily available enclosures, or custom
designed mold preparation), hardware design (schematic &
PCB design), user interface design (front panel/control panels),
firmware/software design, product approvals (CE mark, FCC,
UL etc). We are good at converting mere English descriptions
into complete products by interacting with clients till their
we understand what they have in mind.
Re-engineering services to lower manufacturing costs or to
correct flaws of existing designs: This is self-explanatory.

Printed circuit boards (PCBs)
Once it has been established that the circuit functions as
intended, the next step is usually to make a printed circuit
board.
PCB showing copper connections running beneath the board
Making a PCB
The first step is to draw the circuit on to a mask. This
is a kind of filter which protects the 'positive' parts of
the diagram (the connections between components) and exposes
the 'negative' parts (all the rest). The mask is then placed
on the board which has a thin coating of copper, and the circuit
diagram transferred onto the board using an etch-resist pen.
(An alternative technique uses a photosensitive board which
is covered by the mask and then exposed to light.) The circuit
is then etched onto the board using iron (III) chloride in
an etching tank; this removes all the unwanted copper, leaving
the req uired tracks and pads in place on the board. NB -
this should only be done under a teacher's supervision.
Next, a small PCB drill is used to drill out the center of
the pads. Finally the components are pushed through the board
and soldered in place.
The graphic below shows a mask for a 555 monostable timer
circuit, ready for transferring to a board. Note that masks
are normally shown from the component side - that is, as though
the board was transparent and viewed from the side from which
the components are pushed through.
With the components installed, the board would look like
this:
Soldering
In electronics the main method of joining circuits is soldering.
Electrical solder is made from an alloy of 65 percent tin
and 35 percent lead. It also has a flux running through its
core. The flux is needed to ensure that the solder makes a
good joint between the components and the tracks and wires
on the PCB.

?2008 AirBorn PCB Assembly
A good electronics manufacturer tailors the reliability of
his processes and assemblies to suit his customer base. AirBorn
Electronics designs and manufactures Printed Circuit board
assemblies to a standard compatible with professional quality
equipment. Many of our customers sell expensive niche market
equipment. They really do not want to have a breakdown caused
by a manufacturers decision to use an economical 10c IC socket
in place of a more reliable 50c part. We have other clients
who sell into higher volume commodity-product markets, and
different design rules apply to their work due to the economies
of scale.
It is surprising how many ISO9000 Manufacturers produce atleast
some equipment that complies only with items (8) and (10)
- it is because quality of manufacturing starts with the design.
Its all very well to have an ISO9000 Manufacturer produce
your boards, but if the design is not up to scratch the end
result will ofcourse be faithfully reproduced ISO9000 compliant
junk. Standards rarely specify quality of design - indeed,
when they try to do this they usually create such a rigid
inflexible environment that nothing useful gets produced.
Even with our "top ten" criteria above, there will
be projects where the best design choice involves breaking
one of the rules. It is fantastic to have a strong standards
base for your products and designs, but by and of itself it
is not the whole answer.
By extending the engineering design into the specification
of the manufacturing operation, AirBorn Electronics can increase
the quality of the final product. By being available to respond
to the changing engineering requirements that arise from time
to time in manufacturing, we can help ensure the highest quality
final product in the longer term.
AirBorn Electronics' custom design does not carry with it
an obligation to have us involved with the product manufacturing
- the customer owns the design. The fact that many of our
customers do choose to have us involved with the manufacture
(and not just the design) of their PCBs perhaps illustrates
that we have the quality/price tradeoff set at the right point
for our market. Experience counts for a lot. Refine Search
