Making an Interface PCB II - Parts and Resources

Updated 1/23/2008 with AMP socket connector part numbers (which some people find easier to hand assemble than 3M, but they are more expensive), and a bit more on MCAD.

A list of the parts and resources needed for the FP-SMC-1 Interface PCB. The Phoenix parts are available from a number of sources, including Digikey, but Mouser (who I will use) and Online Components sell them in small quantities.

Software:

Eagle PCB. I’ll be using the Light version (free for non-commercial, $49 for commercial).
Viewmate from PentaLogix, which is a free Gerber viewer.
Alibre Design Xpress which will help check the mechanical side of the PCB (free). If time allows, I’ll cover other options for checking the mechanical fit of the PCB.

Making An Interface PCB I - Introduction

This series describes how to have a PCB made for factory equipment from start to finish using a real board. I am not going to concentrate on the details of the PCB layout software (there are plenty of tutorials available for that), but instead cover details such as getting the right output out of the PCB layout software.

I am going to design a PCB that could be useful in a machine, using components I like. You should be able to learn from this example to design your own low cost board. product and logisitics database allows for effecient and flexible management of PCB manufacture.
Key modules include:

Production planning Production planning

Maximize production capacity, minimize waste and avoid delays. Panelize ordered products and schedule the panels for production in accordance with process times, delivery schedules, factory resources, etc.

Production Line Production Line

Track each panel through its production processes. View product data, special handling, potential delays, etc. Faulty boards or panels are tracked and automatically reported to Production Planning when necessary. Specialized views for each process give operators just the info they need, when they need it.

Generate CAM data on demand for the specific process and machine required. CAM files for photoplotters, drilling, scoring and routing machines, automated testers, etc. are quickly generated for each panel to be manufactured. Support is available for unique serial numbers on each panel.

Browse the current status of the factory, see sales or production trends, track key financial data, and more. A comprehensive suite of statistics for all aspects of production, including: orders, delivery, customers, quotations, production yield, process parameters, raw materials, etc.

Order Fulfillment Order Fulfillment

Monitor orders to be shipped. Generate packing and shipping documents and labels. Supports aggregate shipments to transfer sites (local shipping agents) for reshipment. Supports data transfer to external shipping systems, such as UPS WorldShip.
